Triethylene Glycol (TEG)

Product trade name: Triethylene Glycol

Chemical name: Triethylene Glycol

Synonyms: 2,2′-(1,2-Ethanediylbis(oxy))bisethanol; 2,2’-(1,2-ethanediylbis(oxy))bis-ethanol; 2,2’-(ethylenedioxy)di-ethanol; 2,2’-[1,2-ethanediylbis(oxy)]bis-ethanol; 2,2’-[1,2-Ethanediylbis(oxy)]bisethanol; 2,2’-[1,2-ethanediylbis(oxy)]bis-Ethanol; 2,2’-ethylenedioxybis(ethanol).

Chemical and physical properties: Colorless, transparent, highly viscous liquid. It mixes with water without restrictions, which is due to the large share of hydroxyl groups in the construction of glycol molecules. Solubility in other substances varies, e.g.: well soluble in aliphatic alcohols, aldehydes, ketones and acetic acid; it is sparingly soluble in benzene, gasoline and mineral oils, and not soluble in carbon tetrachloride at all. High boiling points indicate a very strong association of molecules in the liquid phase as a result of the formation of hydrogen bonds. Violent reactions are possible with: strong acids, strong bases, strong oxidants, isocyanates.

Application: Triethylene glycol is used as natural gas dehydrating agent; as a solvent and lubricant for the production of pigments for dyeing textiles and for the production of printing inks, inks and coloring pastes. It is also a plasticizer for the production of cellophane, adhesives, artificial cork, powdered ceramics and some plastics, and a raw material for the production of polyester resins, polyols and insecticides. It can also be used as a humectant, as a component of hydraulic fluids and as a selective solvent for aromas, as well as in the air fumigation process.

Health safety: The substance is very dangerous in case of contact with the eyes (irritant), it can cause conjunctivitis, manifested by redness, itching and tearing, and if swallowed. The substance is slightly hazardous by inhalation.
